Who wants Guacamole?
The Avocado testing is doing very well. I wanted to see if this type of Avocado tree would make it through the heat of the Sacramento summers. It did, with flying colors! Next test is to see if it will survive the Winter frost.
These trees are "STEWART A compact" Mexicola type avocado. Cold Hardy to 18 *F. Black ripening, thin skin fruit. Fruit size 4-8 oz. Ripens August - October.
You see in the picture above a "tent" I built, this is to protect the tree from getting sunburned. In the winter, the tent will fully enclose the tree, to keep the frost off. Once the trees are three years old, and much bigger, the tree's natural canopy will do the job of the tent!
With luck, the Natomas farm will be supplying the locals with fresh avocados.
