........are you prepared for period of being away

Life on a farm is simply fantastic. Open space.....chitter-chattering animals in the barn....the smell of wild grasses and flowers.....so forth. No traffic......nor those annoying helicopters looking for thugs of the night.

Get that third cup of Java right as the sun rises and out you go......feed the animals, check the farm for issues.....then proceed to the daily chores of producing fruits and vegetables....perhaps tending the bee boxes too. It's a seven day a week commitment. No less.....

Now for those of you that are beginner farmers....that is reading this post....Farmer Deno has a few words of wisdom for you. Be prepared for being absent from your farm due to your sickness, a family sickness, or simply taking time off for a vacation! I wasn't.

It's been several years since I have been on a real vacation. It's next to impossible to find a caretaker while you are away. One that can be trusted.....that knows the farm routines clearly. If you are not a vacation type of person....then how bout a bad case of food poisoning that leaves you in the ICU for a week.....such as what happened to me several years ago. All hell breaks loose.

Recently my Mum had a heat attack.....she is now in a rehab. I go down there five days a week to keep an eye on her......my sister does the weekends....bother Gary is in charge of her home. I am losing ground here at the farm due to the family crises.......and certainly did not think of something like this happening. Hardship defines these issues.

In a simple sentence of advice: Be prepared. Make pre arrangements.
