Acacia Baileyana ‘Purpurea’ .....a perfect shade tree.
Being an California Certified Landscaper....I know how important it is to have trees on the residential landscape. Some trees will take years before offering real shade. Installing the shade trees here at the farm, was the very first job on the "to do" list. Second on the "to do" list, was to make sure the house had great air conditioning :-) It didn't, and that's another story....
It amazing to see so many Farmsteads out here in Northern Sacramento County.....that simple haven't any trees planted around the homes....especially on the "hotter than hell"..... afternoon sun side. Throw a tree here and there, and in a matter of a few years, your home will be much cooler. Your outdoor picnic area will be much cooler. The dogs will be much cooler! Get those trees installed if you haven't done it already.
The first weeks here, Farmer Deno installed trees around the house, the garage, barn, and the outer perimeter fences. I used Sycamore trees, Purple Locust Tree and then I added a few Eucalyptus.
Acacia is being added to the list here at the farm. More shade...the merrier! Here' what a website says about it:
"........Beautiful smallish & fast growing evergreen tree much valued for its unique & marvelous silvery-blue purple tinged feathery leaves. TOUGH, not fussy about soil, NOT invasive & neat & tidy, you can see why it’s currently in vogue as a street tree in San Francisco. Sweetly fragrant clusters of bright yellow pom-pom blooms appear in late Winter & early Spring. Easily shaped or pruned (which promotes more purpley color), it’s an excellent subject for a patio tree as well. Lovely in the foreground of richly colored buildings! Hardy to 15° F
The picture I submitted here is four different trees....I wanted to show you just how fast these trees grow. Picture one is planted from a 1- gal container. Two shows what the tree looks like in 3 months. Three shows what the three looks like in 6 months. Finally picture 4 is 12 months!
Want shade? Get the Acacia Baileyana ‘Purpurea’ and watch out for any giants climbing down from it...looking for his golden goose!
